Your answers are not expected to be in a formal essay format (that is, you don’t need an intro, thesis, etc.). Simply answer the questions in a thorough way that reflects what you have learned in the course. This is a final exam on the course material and should reflect what we have talked about this term. It is not meant as a test of your ability to Google information outside of the context of the course. Outside research should be significantly less than the course material, and used in an entirely supplemental way, to avoid a loss of points. It is best used for finding and explaining examples. Using external material is not required.
Citations: You MUST cite direct quotes (and changing a few words doesn’t make it a true paraphrase). For paraphrased material, simply using the author’s last name in a sentence is fine (e.g., As Baylis argues, ….). You do not need a bibliography if you only use the course readings and lectures. Any external sources should be cited and listed in a bibliography. listed in a bibliography. Regarding lectures, you may cite them in the following way: (Attwood,). You should not predominantly or exclusively use lectures, however. Show that you have engaged with the assigned readings! Answer the two following questions in at least 1000 words EACH (per answer). This is a minimum and you can write more, but do not massively exceed this word count (no 3000-word answers please!). Clearly indicate each selection in your answers. Do not retype the entire question; only your answer is used for the word count minimum.
1. What is IPE (or GPE)? Explain how the introduction of new theories has changed its conceptualization. (Hint: You will also need to talk about traditional IPE theories!) Using an IPE perspective, discuss at least three ways in which globalization has fostered global inequalities and three ways in which people have benefitted from globalization. 2. According to the authors of this chapter, Marxist theories argue ‘that the familiar events of world politics—wars, treaties, international aid operations—all occur within structures that have an enormous influence on those events. These are the structures of a global capitalist system’. Choose an ‘event of world politics’ and explain how it has been influenced by the structure of the global capitalist system. The event should be fairly recent (last 30 years or so) or ongoing.
