Write an Argumentative research paper. Begin with a thesis statement that clearly takes a position on an issue and roughly outlines the paper (See “list” thesis vs. “umbrella” thesis). Narrow your topic so that it is suitable for a 6 – 8 page paper. I encourage you to choose something that you care about and/or want to know more about. You may want to consider writing about a topic related to a field of work related to your major, or a hobby in which you are passionate. If you feel completely stuck in terms of choosing a topic, consider visiting procon.org for help with topics and potential research avenues (I recommend using this site, if needed, to springboard your research elsewhere; you’ll still need to compile articles from databases and the web).
Avoid logical fallacies and making claims which cannot be supported by evidence. Plan to devote at least one paragraph to addressing counterarguments to your position. You must include a minimum of 8direct quotes along with in-text citations (plan to use at least one quote per body paragraph) and 2 of your 6 – 10 sources must be from adatabase (Academic Search Premier, EBSCO, etc.). Do not include “I” statements such as “In my opinion” and do not discuss personal experience. Do not use “you.”
I also strongly encourage you to avoid certain topics that have been covered exhaustively (gun control, weed legalization, abortion, etc.). Choose something that interests you and that you’ll want to spend the next month working on.
Purpose:
– To inform the reader about a topic through argument
– To persuade a reader to accept or consider your position
– To conduct research and cite sources with proper MLA citations
– To write a paper virtually free of grammatical error
– To dive deeply into a topic familiar or unfamiliar to you
Requirements:
– Solid thesis statement which clearly states your position
– 6 – 8 typed, double spaced pages (do not add extra space between paragraphs) with name, date, and class in the top left hand corner
– Times New Roman with 1’ margins
– Include a page number in the upper right hand corner of each page
– Include a centered title and works cited page
– Include 6 – 10 sources on your works cited page (will possibly be from your annotated bibs. but you may have since found an additional source useful)
– 2 of those sources must be from one of the library’s databases (Academic Search Premier, etc.)
– Include 6 in-text citations, properly cited
– Works cited page must be double spaced with no extra space in between citations
– Avoid using personal pronouns such as “I” or “my” (remember it’s your paper, so you don’t need to write “In my opinion” or “I think” because that is already assumed)
– Write objectively, for a general, educated audience
Grading Criteria:
– Proofread and free of grammatical errors
– Correct MLAcitation
– Clearly introduces topic with a working thesis
– Supports that thesis in clear, concise, language in a logical order
– Avoids logical fallacies and claims without evidence
– Thoroughly and interestingly covers topic
– Final paragraph restates main points and touches again on thesis statement
– Anticipates and attempts to debunk counter argument(s)
