Assignment Overview
The unit required for Education 499D is based on one specific topic or theme which is explored
across the curricular areas in grades K – 6. The curricular areas or disciplines, such as math,
science, English, social studies, etc. should be viewed with the theory of multiple intelligences in
mind. A graphic organizer, such as a web, is to be included to address the disciplines used in the
units.
Classrooms in California represent many cultural and linguistic perspectives. The unit must
represent a variety of teaching styles to address the needs of all students.
Five lessons and one culminating activity are required for the assignment. The lessons may be
any grade level of your choice withing grades Kindergarten through 6th grade. The entire Unit
should be for one grade level. The lessons are meant to be consecutive, building upon one
another ending with a culminating activity. They should be clearly written and complete so that
another teacher could follow them. The culminating activity should be at least one page of
written information giving the rationale for its inclusion.
The final unit must contain five completed lesson plans and a thoroughly
developed culminating activity. Any item (worksheets, rubrics, quizzes, etc.) to be
given to the student should be included.
You will be doing three things as a part of this assignment: developing thematic teaching units,
addressing all seven multiple intelligence areas, and developing strategies to teach all students.
