Students will write a double spaced, 12 pt. font (Times New Roman or similar) 6-

Students will write a double spaced, 12 pt. font (Times New Roman or similar) 6-page (~1500
words) final paper with a clear thesis statement discussing a topic relevant to issues of gender
and performance. This paper must include a minimum of 5 academic sources, three of which
(no more or less) must be chosen from course material, the remaining 2 from outside, all
carefully and consistently cited in either MLA or APA format (Check the Owl Purdue website to
make sure you’re adhering to style). You must include in-text citations as well as a
Reference/Works Cited page. Any text posted to Avenue can be counted as a course text for
this assignment, whether it appears on the syllabus or not. You may reference more than 5
texts in your paper if necessary, but remember that 6 pages is not a lot of space, so only include
relevant, academic texts + any film/TV show/video game references you need for a coherent,
persuasive paper. Check the handouts and resources posted under Content-> Writing Tips and
Resources for help with all of these elements.
Feedback on this essay is optional. Receiving feedback can be a very sensitive experience, and
for those of you who do not wish to pursue academic writing beyond your undergraduate degree,
feedback may not be very useful to you. You may simply want a grade for this essay, and that is
fine. If you wish to receive feedback along with your grade for this assignment, please
indicate that to us when you submit your essay to the dropbox. There is a space to do so
within the Avenue dropbox, just leave a comment saying something to the effect of “I
would like feedback on this submission”. If you do not indicate that you want feedback, you
will only receive a grade for this assignment, no critique.
Students will be assessed on:
A) adherence to academic essay formatting (thesis, body, conclusion) and citation style,
B) demonstrated understanding and application of course concepts (found in course texts),
C) appropriate selection of and engagement with outside academic sources, and
D) writing style (grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.)
AI Policy
It is strongly recommended that you not use AI to do the actual writing of any assignment. You
can produce better work than AI can. AI can be useful for finding sources and completing
outlines, but it is not good at producing academic essays. It is vague, it is terrible at citations, it
makes up information that it doesn’t know, and it always follows a predictable, overly simplistic
structure that will not get you a good mark on this paper. Please review the full AI policy
contained in the syllabus.
This is just a quick reminder that your professor is an editor and copywriter for a developing AI
chatbot. I see hundreds of AI prompts and completions every day, and will recognize AI writing
if you submit it. When I say that you can produce better work than AI can, I really mean that.
Please remember that we have samples of your writing in the form of your reflections and
presentations, and we will compare these to your final.
Should you choose to use AI to clean up your grammar/spelling/structure, you must submit
your original draft along with the AI processed final draft to prove to me that you wrote
the bulk of this assignment yourself. I will also need to see the prompt you gave to AI
telling it what to do to your original draft. It will be much easier for you to simply write this
paper yourself than it would be to edit an AI-generated essay to make it acceptable for
submission to this course. Use Grammarly if you are concerned about your spelling and
grammar, it is a better tool than Chat GPT for this sort of assignment.
