Read the discussion related to this experiment in your laboratory packet. Carry out the experiment according to the directions.
You will need to provide most of the ingredients called for in this experiment. Glycerin is included in the lab kit. The graduated cylinder is also in the lab kit and can be used in place of the glass cylinder in part A. If you have a glass cylinder available or a bud vase, by all means use them.
The dark Karo syrup (or maple syrup), Dawn dishwashing liquid (blue), vegetable oil (corn oil works good), food coloring, and rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) can be purchased in a grocery store. Hopefully, you will have these available at home and won’t need to purchase any of them. The lead sinker, rubber band, piece of oak or pine (toothpick), plastic and anything else you might want to test should be around the house. If you don’t have the listed items, use items that you do have that can substitute for them.
Part B: Sugar in a Can of Soft Drink Any diet and regular soda will work here. Choose something you like to drink, because when you are done, you can toast the end of the experiment. The scale or balance might prove to be more difficult. Most of us don’t have very accurate kitchen scales at home. You can purchase a small digital balance but I don’t expect you to spend lots of money on this experiment. Do the best you can with what you have. If you live close to a high school or college, you might drop by the science department and ask if you can use one of their balances. Or a postal scale will work as well.
In part 6 of this experiment, you are asked to add sugar to the diet beverage. Be careful here, because it will foam up all over the place. After pouring it into the glass container, I suggest you let the beverage sit for a long time at room temperature to let most of the carbonation escape. Download and open the
Report sheet for this experiment and type your observations and other information into the appropriate boxes. Once you have finished, save the document and then submit it.

Don’t forget to take a picture of yourself doing the experiment (along with your picture ID) and submit the picture along with your report! Note, you MUST include a picture of you doing the lab to receive ANY credit. That picture must include your face, some of the lab work and a piece of picture ID. All future laboratory work must also include a picture like this.
