Write a journal response about theme within that story. Your journal will use quotes from the story to support what you are discussing in your writing. Here are some suggested themes you may wish to consider for each story:
“All Summer in a Day”:  loss of innocence, disillusionment of dreams, isolation.
Consider the following prompts to write about as you think about theme in the story and complete your journal response:
What is the theme – the main idea suggested?
Do certain symbols convey theme? 
How does theme shape/play a role in the story?
What evidence or details support the theme?
What are some connections between the theme and your life?
How is theme reflected in one character?
How do aspects of the theme puzzle or confuse you?
Also, attached are questions about the story for you to think about while you analyze the story. You do not have to answer them; they are there to help you with your interpretation of the story.
Evaluation Criteria:
1. Demonstrates a clear understanding of the element of theme by discussing in detail one or more possible central ideas of the story. 
2.  Shows by way of quotes how the central idea or ideas are manifested in terms of character, setting, and/or symbol. Student can choose one or more of these elements.
3.  Observations are backed up with quotes from the story.
4.  Quotes are fully explained.
5.  Journal contains very few grammatical, mechanical or fluency errors.
Additionally, but not mandatory:
1. Comments on what may be puzzling or confusing about possible themes.
2. Makes connections between student’s own life experience and the theme or themes of the story.
