Let’s use this module and this assignment to reflect a little. Many of our assignments so far have asked you to provide pretty specific answers in your submissions. In this assignment, however, let your mind go broad and range over the materials in this module.
Respond to any ONE of the following prompts. Be sure to cut and paste the prompt into your response so we know which one you’re responding to.
As you prepare your response, remember that you need to make it clear that you’ve read/watched the materials in this module and that you are using your brain to reflect on what we’ve learned. (That means quoting from the readings/documentary, citing page numbers or time stamps, and really explaining the connections.) General pat statements like “Diversity is so important” or “I really believe we should all be inclusive” need to be supported with reasoning explaining why. Sharing personal experiences and anecdotes is a great idea, but be sure to do more than just tell a story. Explain why the story matters and how what we’ve learned in class has helped you rethink that personal experience.
Choose any one of our readings in this module and reflect upon how the reading as a whole (or any excerpt or quote) resonates with your own life or the way that you think about ideas like equity, diversity, inclusion, et cetera generally or in your own life. This might be because you finally have words to describe experiences or thoughts you’ve had or it may be because you connected with a different vantage point or way of understanding your experiences and the world around you.
Did anything in our materials this week really “hit home” or cause a shift of thinking or viewpoint for you? What was it that hit home — and why? Remember to be specific. Instead of a general “These materials really made me think differently…,” focus in on one reading or quote or comment or segment.
Name and explain at least two ways that feminism as presented in our materials this week is different from the feminisms we learned about in our early modules with the Makers videos. How might you define your own ideas about feminism as a social justice movement now that we’ve covered so much material in our class? Feel free to connect feminism to other social justice movements.
Consider your own constellation of identities (sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, physical and mental ability, socioeconomic class, et cetera). Did any of the pieces we read this week or any of the speakers in the documentary connect with any or all of your identities? If so, how and why? If not, why not? If not, do you think any of the materials in this module might connect to your identities? What might be missing that you would add?
