Individual Assignment 1: Ethical

Individual Assignment 1: Ethical
considerations with diverse populations. (NAMI + 2 additional references).
Grading Rubric:  The Grading Rubric for this assignment can be found below this window.
Background: The social worker’s role in the ethical and professional treatment of people suffering from mental illness includes factors such as working within one’s scope of practice and ensuring equity of service.  Social workers must take into account the historical and cultural significance of policies and forms of discrimination aimed at disrupting equity of treatment for mental health issues.  Beginning social workers nurture these skills by considering these factors when developing interventions for specific populations and issues.  Treatment is never a one sizes fits all endeavor; each intervention must be custom tailored to the specific population it is meant to serve.
Purpose: The primary purpose of this individual assignment is to help students to begin to hone the skill of identifying ethical consideration and utilizing them in the creation of interventions for diverse populations.  The secondary purpose is for learners to consider the incorporation of this information into their second group assignment, due later in this course (group assignment 2).
Description: Learners will select a specific mental health illness and population.  Use the text, Gould (2016), the NASW Code of Ethics and other material shared in the course to select a specific age, gender, race and/or ethnic background.  Learners should investigate peer-reviewed articles on mental health as it relates to their chosen topic and ethical treatment with the population of choice.  Using at least one journal article, the text and the NASW Code of Ethics (3 references total, as a minimum), write a 5 page paper that considers the following categories; 1) history of treatment inequities and discrimination, 2) the cultural views of the chosen population on mental health treatment, 3) social workers role in providing accommodations and culturally sensitive interventions for the chosen population and 4) perceptions on the next steps in social advocacy for the chosen population and mental health issue.  While this is an individual assignment, learners may want to consider how this information can be used in group assignment 2.  What population and information you include in that assignment will, of course, be a group decision.  This paper should contain a cover page, APA formatting, and reference page.  Neither the cover page nor the reference page will be included in the 5-page requirement.
