•The key literature are the core texts for the module (as above). These outline the main models which must be referred to is PESTLE. A strong exploration of HR will include McGregor’s Theory X (hard) and Y (soft)
HR. An exceptional essay will include the Resource Based View used by HR Strategists. 
• It should demonstrate a knowledge of the functions of Human Resources (e.g., recruitment, employee relations, performance management, etc.) and who is responsible for these functions in different sizes, or organisational designs, of business. (e.g. a large-scale business is likely to have an HR Department with specialists in all of the functions but an SME is likely to delegate some HR to line management.
Where the essay demonstrates not only a knowledge of each function but how they integrate into HR strategy this gains extra marks.
It must demonstrate a knowledge of which financial, economic and social determinant might affect how a business approaches HR. There will also be a keen sense of understanding how affect will differ between MCs and SMEs. 
• A basic awareness of how labour markets evolve, potentially noting the political context and social attitudes towards work will gain credit.

–  should use PESTLE (as outlined in Hook and Jenkins) to show how, for instance, a labour market might influence HR thinking (e.g. how a short labour market might influence thinking on pay). The essay is not about PESTLE, however, and must use PESTLE to determine which issue in the business environment requires HR to change (E.g., a change in immigration law will not necessarily require a large change in HR, but a recession is likely to). An strong answer will use PESTLE to briefly identify some issues and then focus on one or two which allow them to illustrate their general knowledge of HR.

Medium-sized Enterprise. The comparison between the two should not be extensive but show a critical awareness of how HR might be different in various settings.
– It is required to demonstrate a knowledge of all the HRM functions within organisations (outlined in Hook and Jenkins). A strong answer will demonstrate how each function influences the other (e.g. recruitment influences performance management, and the reverse).
– an excellent answer will include a conclusion which, by showing an awareness of integrated functions, clearly demonstrates the critical thinking required to develop and HR strategy based on the question (here how any PESTLE factor of importance develops HR thinking).
