Final Presentation directions
Your final exam will be in the form of a final group presentation (3 students per group) addressing a noteworthy and serious incident of juvenile delinquency that I will assign.
I will assign each group an incident which may have occurred in the five (5) N.Y.C. boroughs, Nassau, Suffolk, or any other County in New York State.
Each student in the group of three (3) assigned to the same incident, will discuss the juvenile crime incident assigned to them and address one of three (3) aspects:
a. The 1st student in the team’s presentation will describe the incident: Who, Where, When, What, How and Why (describe the apparent motive). Then, the student will describe the court process for the juvenile (s) in question. What court was the case heard in? What were the steps in the system from incident – to arrest – to adjudication – to sentencing?
b. The 2nd student will research what background information is available on the juvenile (s) who committed the crime (family, neighborhood, school, cognition etc..). The student will then explain the group’s theory as to why the juvenile (s) might have chosen to commit the crime. Describe any relevant background of the juvenile’s life when assessing the incident and defending the group’s explanation & theory.
c. The 3rd student in the group will recommend an appropriate sanction, penalty, program, community corrections etc. which the group feels is appropriate and would prevent recidivism by the juvenile (s). The student will need to defend the group’s recommendation.
Assignment notes:
• Essentially, the members of the group will play the role of Juvenile Probation Officers, hypothesizing factors that led to the delinquency, and designing a program of rehabilitation for the youth (s).
• The group will present from the front of the class.
• The group will use a PowerPoint presentation of less than ten (8) slides.
• Each member of the group should cover one of the three (3) aspects; the incident and ensuing court process; a causal theory e.g., the JD’s background that may be related; an appropriate program of rehabilitation. Then cover each on a few slides.
• To complete the assignment, members of the group should research the incident given: What happened, arrest to disposition? Look into offender’s background, what relevant causal theories might apply? What program of rehabilitation is suggested and why (note: this may be different than what sentence was actually issued)?
Your Presentation is:
