Fact-Checking AI
Generative AI tools like ChatGPT have become popular for help in completing writing assignments. The downside of this is that AI does not always get it right. Your assignment this week is to fact-check AI for accuracy, completeness and plagiarism.
Your Instructions:
Choose one of your classmates articles’ and evaluate their AI-generated summary in one of or more of these ways:
Fact-check the summary by cross-referencing the article
Does the AI give accurate reference to the original journal article the news article is discussing?
Does AI attribute quotes or opinions accurately?
Does AI get the facts correct, according to the article?
Identify important parts of the article that were missed by AI
Was there a certain angle of the article that was ignored by the AI?
Did the AI leave out facts or opinions that, if included, would change the tone of the summary?
Check summary for plagiarism of the article
Does the wording of certain sentences match the article too closely?
Does the structure of the summary follow that of the article too closely?
Are some sentences nearly verbatim?
Reflect (in writing) on what you learned about using AI to summarize articles.
Please begin your post with the title of the article you are responding to.
The classmate article:
The researchers at North Carolina State University and international collaborators have created a thorough map of the mosquito’s evolutionary history, an important advancement towards understanding crucial characteristics such as host selection, blood-feeding behavior, and disease transmission. This study aims to enhance predictions for modeling disease spread and clarify why certain mosquitoes are more effective in carrying disease than other bugs. Their research indicates that mosquito evolution over the past 200 million years aligns with Earth’s geological and biological changes, including changes in land masses and evolving host organisms. By analyzing extensive academic literature and utilizing new genomic sequencing techniques, the researchers were able to obtain genetic information about mosquito specimens as far as ten years ago.
The study reveals several key findings: mosquitoes are an ancient group, originating around 217 million years ago in what is now South America before the continent split apart. The evolution of the mosquitoes’ blood-feeding behavior that came before the spread of mammals and birds. This suggests that mosquitoes initially fed on amphibians before ultimately transitioning to reptiles and birds during the Jurassic period. This research provides insights into the evolutionary pathways that led to mosquitoes becoming disease spreaders and offers a foundation for understanding why mosquitoes are more skilled at transmitting diseases than others. The ongoing project aims to further refine the mosquito family tree, which could ultimately lead to improved strategies for disease prediction and control.
