RAA 4 – Literature Review Draft 1
How does this assignment fit with previous and upcoming assignments?
It is expected that you will use the feedback from previous assignments to develop a strong and Complete Literature Review.
You will almost certainly need to include additional sources to the previous assignment to ensure that all relevant literature domains (e.g., research topics, variables under study, theory, etc.) are represented in your complete review of the literature.
Specific grading criteria are as follows:
The literature review provides your readers with the framework of your research project. The text of the literature review might range from 6 to 8 pages in length, although there is no absolute length requirement. The literature review should contain the following elements:An introduction – the criteria for the introduction of the literature review are articulated in the Introduction of Literature Review assignment. You must revise your introduction in light of my feedback!
Following the introduction, the literature review continues with (quite predictably) a review of the relevant literature used to design and develop the present research study (that is, your research project).Your review of the literature should help put your study into perspective. Only review the pertinent literature that contextualizes your specific study.
It is often appropriate to provide a brief historical overview of past research.
Go beyond description of the literature – include analysis (examining two or more ideas in relation to each other), synthesis (combining these ideas to produce a new cohesive product), and critique (explaining strengths and weaknesses of the literature). Critiques should foreshadow how your study will build and improve upon past research.
When presenting others’ research, focus on their conclusions supported with data (reported in the Discussion) rather than their tentative assertions (presented in the Literature Review).
Use headings and transitions liberally (see the APA manual).
As discussed in Keyton (pp. 303-304), there are several different ways to organize a literature review. Organize your review to logically lead the reader to your eventual RQ or H. (Tip – If you are struggling with organization, consider the following topical format. First, discuss your first variable in one subsection, then your second variable in another subsection. Theory may be discussed before, after, or concomitantly with the discussion of the variables. Finally, end with analysis and synthesis of the two variables and formal presentation of a hypothesis or research question in the final subsection. Each subsection should be marked with a heading.)
You should propose one (and only one) research question or hypothesis at the very end of your literature review. For the purpose of the assignment, state your RQ or H formally and separately (in a new paragraph). RQs should be denoted as RQ1 or RQ1 and Hs should be denoted as H1 or H1.
Make sure that your literature review prepares the reader for your specific RQ or H. For example, make sure that your literature review reviews the relevant literature for both of the variables in your RQ or H (not just one variable).
Include a reference page of all sources cited in the literature review (and only those cited in the literature review). Use APA style (the manual itself and the style wizard). In the text of your literature review, be sure to cite sources properly (the APA manual is the definitive resource, but also seek the APA style wizard (http://www.stylewizard.comLinks to an external site.).
The literature review is different from a journal article critique.Your literature review may reference books, communication research and non-communication research journal articles. Sometimes non-scholarly works may be included to help document extremely recent trends, but generally, these works should be used judiciously. Please consult with me about citing non-scholarly works (e.g., newspapers, certain websites, etc.).
In your literature review, avoid discussing your sources (e.g., articles and books) separately paragraph by paragraph. That is, avoid discussing the first article in the first paragraph, the second article in the second paragraph, and so on. Instead, think about your sources more holistically. It often works better to discuss ideas paragraph by paragraph.
Your assignment will be graded on completeness and he accuracy and strength of ideas.
Clear, coherent, and error-free writing is important. Use APA style accurately. Strive for orderly, smooth, economical, precise, and clear expression (see the APA manual). Remember to write in the third person. Also consult your notes, relevant chapters, and various examples of communication research.
