A nine-year-old girl presents with a one-day history of a 4 lb. weight gain and abdominal pain. Her mother reports that her daughter seems to have been more tired over the past 24 hours with significant abdominal swelling.
Laboratory tests reveal that the urinalysis shows proteinuria. Additionally, serum lipid levels obtained (cholesterol and triglycerides) are elevated. Hypoalbuminemia is present. On physical exam, you note ascites, blood pressure within normal limits, however, pitting edema is assessed. The child appears fatigued.
