READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!  The only reason you will earn a low mark for this

READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!  The only reason you will earn a low mark for this essay is by not reading the instructions.  No mercy will be shown on those who don’t follow the below instructions.
ESSAY PROMPT
The main purpose of the personal essay is to mine your own life, your own observations of real life, for a non-fiction narrative of 400+ words, that explores an event that had a meaningful impact in your life.  The event can be very specific (learning to water ski for the first time or getting in a hang-gliding accident) or more drawn out (making it through the pandemic or your 7th grade year at middle school).  The impact the event/experience has had on your life is the through-line, the theme, your essay’s “thesis.”
The format and style of your essay should be approximately similar to The Chase  Download The Chaseand Total Eclipse Download Total Eclipse(essays by Annie Dillard), i.e. an essay that focuses on one event as told in an in-scene recollection.  (The Chase is assigned to read for this Thursday, April 13th.)  The topic can be humorous, tragic, insightful.  It’s up to you.  This essay is meant to be about your life, so have fun with it, let your own writing style shine.  Imagine a future literature class reading your essay in an anthology book of great essays.
Below are the four required elements you must include in order to earn a 100.  Missing one of these components may likely result in a 20 point deduction per element.
REQUIRED ELEMENTS to earn a 100:
focus on a specific meaningful event in your life
be at least 500 words long
use or examine specific objects to convey the richness of the essay’s world or to reveal something important about the event
includes passages from BOTH a close-in, descriptive perspective AS WELL AS a zoomed-out, reflective perspective – (If you don’t know what this means, read Total Eclipse Download Total Eclipseto get an idea of how Annie Dillard accomplishes this.)
Literary elements to possibly use throughout your essay:
Flashbacks / flash-forwards / flash-sideways
Lines of Dialogue
Foreshadowing
similes & metaphors
