COMPONENTS OF LITERACY: PHONICS AND WORD RECOGNITION, FLUENCY, &
VOCABULARY ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
This assignment is related to the textbook chapters on the following components of literacy:
phonics/word recognition, fluency, and vocabulary. You will complete a series of activities for
each of the three literacy components. The activities for each component include: a summary of
the chapter, a summary of the YouTube video, a list of 3 websites with a description, and a
reflection. You will combine all of the activities together in one Word document organized by
literacy component. You will create one title page and one reference page for the entire
document. Current APA format should be used throughout the document. Include current APA
citations to the textbook chapters in your summaries. Please use the outline below to complete
this project.
 Title Page
 Section Heading: Phonics/Word Recognition
Please include the following in this section.
o A summary of the chapter (minimum 300 words)
o A summary of the related YouTube video provided for this component (minimum
200 words)
o A list of 3 websites with instructional strategies related to the literacy component
and a 100 word description of how you would use the strategies in each website in
your teaching of literacy (100 word description of each website)
o A reflection of what you have learned about the literacy component from the
chapter, the websites, and the video. Also include a response to each of the
following questions below (minimum 250 words).
 How does your new learning about this component connect to your
personal philosophy of literacy?
 How can digital literacy or technology be integrated into this component
of literacy?
 Section Heading: Fluency
Please include the following in this section.
