The Research Outline is, as it sounds, an outline of YOUR PART of the health issue/topic you and your team selected to study and create a team presentation for, during this course. Your research outline will consist of an introduction, followed by lists of key points and their linked references.
NOTE: All written content in these assignments is to be created by YOU. You may not use artificial intelligence (AI) resources, such as generative AI chatbots, to assist you with this assignment. If that occurs, you will receive an automatic zero on the respective assignment. All team project members must participate in the Research Outline and Team Project Presentation assignments. If a group member does not contribute to the presentation assignment, they will be graded accordingly.
The Research Outline assignment requires that you apply your intellectual skills: concise description of the material as it relates to your health issue, succinct analysis, and informed library research. (Core Objectives: Critical Thinking, Communication, Empirical and Quantitative, and Teamwork Skills.)
A research outline requires you to:
Know which “part” of the health issue/topic you are responsible for. NOTE: You and your team project members already identified a topic and parsed that topic out among the group members. Now it is time for EACH team member, individually, to research your part of the topic, gathering evidence-based information from reliable resources.
Locate 6 evidence-based sources of information (i.e., peer-reviewed journal article, CDC or other reliable website) and write a brief descriptive statement. This assignment works much like a puzzle in that you and your team gathers the puzzle pieces and then, through group communication, you discuss how those pieces fit together to reveal the whole picture, or in this case, how an evaluation of the information and your own opinions frame an evidence-based recommended course of action related to your health topic. NOTE: This assignment is NOT a review of a website. Further, be sure to follow the instructions and grading rubric requirements closely.
Write a brief summary (2 separate paragraphs, each with at least 5 complete sentences) about your part of the health issue/topic. This written content must be cited in APA format. REMINDER: Simply listing a source or link at the end of each paragraph is not sufficient. For this assignment, you are required to paraphrase and summarize the information you researched IN YOUR OWN WORDS and include in-text citations.
Create an APA formatted reference list for your sources (and any additional in-text citations used in your written paragraphs).
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Select a Topic: As a team, you already chose a public health issue or topic. Communicate with your project team members to “parse,” or divide the topic out. Then, you will have a solid direction to go in with your research. Then, before you proceed, review the grading rubric criteria carefully. NOTE: Your instructor recommends meeting virtually with your group in MSTeams vs. communicating via text-based messaging only!
2. Assess Sources: Begin the process of gathering your sources by first searching for your topic in Google Scholar or using databases available through the UTA Libraries such as PubMed. Locate 10-12 peer-reviewed articles that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual articles, selecting your final 6 sources. NOTE: These articles should be directly related to YOUR PART of the health issue/topic.
3. Read the Peer-reviewed Articles: Read each article and summarize the author’s main points as you go. Be sure you pay special attention to how this particular source fits into the larger, ongoing public health conversation about the topic. A good approach to this is to list main points and then tie those together in a few bullet points.
4. Develop the Outline Points: Now you are ready to fill out the assignment template, listing the website link to each journal article, followed by a couple of sentences that summarize the bulleted points you denoted in Step #3 above. (Core Objectives: Critical Thinking, Communication, Empirical and Quantitative, and Teamwork Skills.) NOTE: You are required to use this research outline assignment template.
Actions
5. Develop the Summary Paragraphs to Your Part of the Health Issue/Topic: Now that you are familiar with your part of the health issue/topic, you will create two well-developed, detailed paragraphs, each with at least 5 complete sentences. You are required to use in-text citations for this part of the assignment. NOTE: Many students lose points unnecessarily for not including TWO SEPARATE paragraphs and/or forget to write from an evidence-based perspective, including IN-TEXT CITATIONS IN APA FORMAT.
6. Develop the Reference List for Your 6 Sources: Now that you have listed your 6 resources, you will create your reference list. The reference list must be written in APA style: double-spaced and using Times New Roman size 12. NOTE: Here is a good resource to help you with the reference list: Reference List: Basic RulesLinks to an external site.)
7. Review the Grading Rubric: Most students who receive a poor grade on this assignment make the following errors. These errors may be avoided if you review the grading rubric and check for errors prior to submission!
DO NOT COPY AND PASTE FROM THE INTERNET OR USE WORK SUBMITTED FOR ANOTHER COURSE!
NO QUOTES
NO SECONDARY CITATIONS AND WRITE ONLY IN THIRD-PERSON TENSE
CHECK FOR SPELLING, PUNCTUATION, GRAMMAR AND DICTION BEFORE YOU SUBMIT.
8. Submit the Assignment: When your research outline is complete (and you have proofread for errors and checked your plagiarism index!), post the assignment as a single MSWord document to the assignment portal.
EXAMPLE OF A-LEVEL WORK
The example below provides you with a student submission that is considered A-Level work. Although the assignment is not perfect, it will provide you with a good idea of how to get started on the assignment, along with what is expected.
