Task 1
#1 due date 4-4-24 Materials:
Use the Module 5 Required Reading in your textbook, the Module 5 Online Exploration, and the grading rubric as your guides for writing this evaluation essay.
Instructions:
For this Art Interpretive Evaluation Essay, you will view and evaluate the work of visual art presented in the Module 5 Online Exploration. The painting is the ″Self-Portrait on the Border Between Mexico and the United States″ by Frida Kahlo. She composed this painting during a prolonged stay in the United States while her husband Diego Rivera was working there on another art project.
1. First be sure you have reviewed all materials in this learning module and that you have read Chapter 5 in your textbook.
2. You may wish to open the larger version of Kahlo′s painting to more carefully examine it as you compose your evaluation.
3. You should also refer back to the Module 5 Online Exploration resources and USE AND CITE these research sources in your essay. You may use additional resources too. In any case, be sure to cite your sources.
4. Submit your essay as a Word Document (.doc or .docx) or as a Rich Text Format (.rtf) file.
5. Essay Instructions: Now that you′ve carefully examined the work of visual art and completed your research, compose an essay of at least 400 words (total) where you compose an essay of FIVE fully developed paragraphs (one paragraph for each of the following questions):
Paragraph 1: Describe the painting: What is your general impression of the painting? What parts of the painting represent Mexico? What parts of the painting represent the United States? How do these two depictions differ?
Paragraph 2: Interpret the painting: Kahlo once said, ″I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.″ What parts of herself does Kahlo seem to be exploring in this self-portrait? What might she be saying about herself in relation to the two countries in the painting? Cite examples to support your interpretation.
Paragraph 3: Identify the artistic characteristics and styles in the painting: What elements of surrealism do you see in the painting? What elements of indigenous art do you see? How do the two work together? Cite specific examples.
Paragraph 4: Interpret the artist′s motivation: This is the most speculative. Frida Kahlo was first exhibited as Mrs. Diego Rivera. How do you think being married to a famous man affected Kahlo′s life and her work? Is there anything in the painting that has relevance to her position as a famous artist′s wife?
Paragraph 5: This painting is considered a ″valuable and important″ piece of art. Do you agree? If so, explain which features of the painting makes you agree. If not, explain why you disagree by citing relevant features of the painting.

TASK 2
# 2 due date 4/11/24
Materials
Use the Module 6 Required Reading in your textbook, the Module 6 Online Exploration, and your own independent research as your guides for writing this evaluation.
Instructions
1. Locate and select a contemporary music video released after January 1, 2000, by any composer / performer that has an easily sharable URL that can be viewed by your classmates. Please try to expand past artists like BTS, who have gained popularity in the US.
Youtube and Soundcloud both have large libraries of easily shareable songs.
2. Carefully listen to your selected song and critically examine its components, style, context, and influence. You may also wish to refer back to the Module 6 Required Online Exploration resources as well as the required pages in your textbook.
3. Do research and find the relevant information. Be sure to properly cite the websites, books, textbook, etc. where you found the information.
Original Response (70 points):
Part I. Background information of your chosen song
Include the URL (hyperlink) to your chosen song.
Identify the song and artist / band that you chose and provide a brief biography of your chosen artist / band.
Describe the artist′s / band′s style of music.
Identify at least one musician, band or musical style from the textbook or online exploration that might have influenced your chosen song. (Consider similarities in components, style, and/or context).
Indicate how you came to that conclusion and include specific evidence from the text, your research, your online exploration, and your chosen song that supports your arguments.
Explain why you chose the song, using your knowledge of musical components, styles, and history
Part II. Music Analysis
Discuss the formal elements of music you hear as you listen to the song (not the lyrics of the song). How are these elements used to create “meaning”? Be specific. Don’t just talk in general terms about the music or about the lyrics. (hint: use time markers when referring to examples from the music).
When you listen to the song, what does it remind you of and what images come to mind when you hear it?
How do the formal elements create these images? Again, I′m not looking for an analysis of the lyrics. You should focus on the formal qualities of the music.

In the THIRD paragraph (at least 150 words):
Compare and contrast the styles of Classical ballet and Modern dance.
Identify how both of these dance compositions (Swan Lake and Night Journey) are ″interdisciplinary″ (i.e. are related to one or more of the disciplines in humanities we have studied so far).

Task 4
# 4 due date 4/21/24
Materials
Use the Module 9 Required Readings in your textbook, the Module 9 Online Exploration resources, the Module 9 Research Resources, and your own independent research for writing this discussion post.
Instructions
In this 5-part discussion, you will (1) view a self-selected film, (2) compose a 3-paragraph original post; (3 & 4) reply to two classmates′ original posts; and (5) reflect on the film review experience.
1. Review the materials above; then select a film of your own choosing. Before you view the film, you must find, read, and cite at least one research source beyond your textbook about the film (try Google Scholar or the SPC Library). If you cannot find a single research source or independent review of the film to use as a reference with citations, then you MUST select another film. In other words, the film must be one that has been written about. If it is a brand new film, check with your instructor first.
Your selection can be a full length feature film or a documentary of your own choosing. It must be at least 30 minutes in length. Be sure to watch the film immediately before writing this essay and consider jotting notes as you watch the film. Do not rely on your memory of a film you have previously seen. If you do, it will be obvious because this review requires close examination of the technical aspects of film.
2. After finding and reading a research source for integration in your essay (and carefully viewing the film), write a new thread using the following instructions:
In the FIRST paragraph (at least 150 words):
What is the title of your selected film?
Who is the director and what year was it released?
Is it considered a ″classic″?
Identify any technical features of the film.
What is the genre of the film (e.g. western, romantic comedy, film noir, documentary, etc.)?
In the SECOND paragraph (at least 150 words):
Summarize the main plot and/or conflict in the film. Be sure to identify the main character(s) here.
Using the themes and concepts noted in Section 9.7 in your textbook (in the section A Word on Critical Viewing), identify at least three of these themes and explain how they apply to your selected film.
Indicate any “social issue,” if any, that is addressed in the film.
Identify at least one “camera technique” or “use of sound” in the film, and explain how it affects the viewer.
In the THIRD paragraph (at least 150 words):
Evaluate its ″craft.″ Is this a good example of this type of art? Is it well presented? What are its points of value? Does it have a message? Did we learn something from the characters and/or theme of this film? In what ways did the film resemble literature, theater, or art?
What types of reviews did this film receive based on your research of other reviews or scholarly commentaries?
In the end, what type of aesthetic experience did you have? Was it mostly an Apollonian or Dionysian experience?
Would you recommend this work of art to others? If so (or not), why?
