Final Research Project
The research project for this class will ask you to identify a problem, define it as such (why is this a problem?), and define as well urgency of the problem. The essay’s scope can be as large as statewide, but I encourage an even narrower focus to prevent “research creep” which is that never-ending line that can sometimes happen.
Purpose: To identify and understand an issue or problem facing a locality of up to state level. The essay’s design is to carefully point to a quantifiable issue using research, including current definitions from other sources to synthesize their own definition of the problem.
The assignment is designed to make people more aware of their community and their ability to influence or to affect change. Keep that in mind as you move forward with it, and don’t be afraid to tackle an issue you have dealt with personally (I actually encourage that for this assignment).
Skills: The student should after completing the essay
Demonstrate awareness of audience and genre of their own writing
Demonstrate the use of inquiry, thought and communication through the essay’s composition, including the response and synthesis of outside material
Demonstrate the ability to navigate several different types of sources
Demonstrate control over MLA format, including citations and construction of the essay
Criteria for success:
The essay will be no less than 1,500 words in length (excluding the works cited page)
The essay will incorporate 4-6 sources, including at least half that deal with the issue within the last year, and when possible incorporate articles from the UA-PTC library
The UA-PTC library’s database includes ProQuest, which has access to the Arkansas Times
The essay will use quotations from at least half the sources and cite paraphrased or summarized information appropriately for those that are not quoted.
The essay will be written either in MLA or APA format and citations/references handled appropriately both internally and externally.
The essay will demonstrate appropriate language and tone for an academic discourse.
The essay’s scope will be within a state-wide region and be a present (ongoing) issue for discussion
