English 102 Writing Assignment: Essay 2
Professor Barbara Crawford
ASSIGNMENT:
Analysis is an essential skill needed for success in college and in life. An analysis involves first breaking down the information presented in a work into individual pieces and then examining the pieces to better understand the whole. First analyze the poem you selected. What is the dominant theme (message) of the poem? Analyze and explore the poem’s dominant images, symbols, tone in relation to its theme. You will need to assert what the poem says about its topic. Write a 3 to 4 page essay in response to one of the following:
Discuss the portrayal of human relationships in any poem in this unit, focusing especially on the poem’s tone and theme. You may analyze the relationship in one work or compare relationship in two poems. Relationships may be parent-child, friends, lovers, or even one’s relationship to nature.
Choose any poem from our unit and explore the meaning and effect of its metaphor (s). Does the poem make use of an extended or controlling metaphor or of multiple metaphors? If the latter, how do the metaphors relate to and build on each other?
Choose any poem from our unit in which you think setting is especially key to the poem’s effect and meaning or in which you think the meaningfulness of setting depends on the associations of particular times and/or places. Write an essay explaining why and how so.
Choose any poem in our unit in which an object or action seem to function as a symbol. Write an essay exploring that symbol’s various possible meanings.
You may choose to respond to the poem in a different way relevant to how you understand and connect to the work. Be sure to support the thesis that you assert about the work.
As you respond to the poem, be sure to note the line numbers to cite your evidence. For example, “prance across a screen” (1) or “her terrified hands will lie / Still ringed with ordeals” (9-10). Use a single slash ( / ) to indicate line breaks in the poem and a double slash ( // ) to indicate stanza breaks.
Use the MLA format below on your Works Cited page for the poem you discuss. Be sure to put in the name of the specific author and poem.
Last name, First name. “Title of poem.” The Norton Introduction to Literature, 12th ed. Edited by Kelly J.
