I started this discussion with a typical google search of health issues surrounding adolescents and young adults and I stumbled upon a site that says suicide “is the third leading cause of death for teens, with approximately one in 11 high school students attempting suicide.”(Morin 2018). I was intrigued and chose this for my discussion board. However, upon researching the topic I have begun to realize there is not much information on the topic and Ithink a part of that is the stigma that remains around suicide and denial of the health careindustry. But if this is the third leading cause of death of our younger citizens then I feel it should be addressed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say “suicide is a serious public health problem that affects many young people. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth between the ages of 10 and 24, and results in approximately 4,600 lives lost each year.”(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
There are many ways this problem can be addressed. Some of the basic things teens and parents can do to help prevent suicide or combat mental issues is by understanding what specifically the problem is to begin with. “”Sometimes taking the screening is the first step before having a conversation with someone,” says Theresa Nguyen, Mental Health America’s vice president of policy and programs. “People think, ‘Now I have something tangible that I can give to my parents or someone I trust.’” (Ruiz 2019). Then getting the proper education to such diagnosis or concern is imperative.
There are many resources in the community such as community health centers, behavioral health centers and a plethora of online resources such national hotlines and mental health websites. “These interventions could be developed in youth-friendly ways and disseminated through community-based channels, such as educational settings and the internet.”(Patel, Flisher, Hetrick, & McGorry 2007). These services can merely be implemented into curriculum at schools, or after school programs. They can also be given internet base which in turn has nearly no cost to schools or the teens/parents themselves. So, if information can so easily be accessed, and can be considered cost effective, isn’t it worth it to the community to utilize more to help combat this significant health issue among teens and young adults.
