Professional development participation is a requirement of all teachers. It allows teachers to become more effective in many ways. One way to develop professionally is to ask questions of other practitioners in the field. For this assignment, you will first interview and then observe a special education teacher. The focus of this field experience is on how to create an inclusive, safe, and supportive classroom environment that promotes growth and learning for all students.
Interview your selected special education teacher using the Interview and Observation Guide to facilitate the interview and record responses. After the interview, you will remain in the classroom and observe the teacher while taking notes in the guide.
Once you have completed the interview and observation, write a minimum 525-word reflection of your important take-aways from this experience related to the following:
Creating a classroom that is inclusive, supportive, and emotionally safe
Encouraging students’ self-awareness, self-advocacy, and self-determination
Supporting exceptional learners in a diverse classroom through engagement
Using discipline procedures required by IDEA
