1. Re-read your ‘Pearls of Wisdom’ paper. The purpose of this paper, you may recall, was to help us reflect on how we can lead ‘a good life’ by following some small bit of practical advice. We saw how these ‘cultural folk sayings’ connected to our personal experiences and how they even helped guide us in our decision making.
2. Write two solid full paragraphs addressing how you see your Pearl of Wisdom relating to the more detailed and complex ethical theories of Aristotle, Kant, Mill, etc. Make sure to address the questions below, as well as providing other examples or illustrations.
A. Briefly state your Pearl of Wisdom, note what it meant to you, and explain how you used it.
B. Do you now see your Pearl of Wisdom differently since you have learned the ethical theories? Why or why not?
C. Is your Pearl of Wisdom is as good and helpful as what we have learned in class? Why or why not?
D. Do our ethical theories offer a different level or type of guidance and support? Yes or no? Why or why not? Give examples to support your answer.
E. Feel free to include any additional observations you may have between your Pearl of Wisdom and the ethical theories.
3. Compose a 1 to 2 page single spaced essay on something you have learned in this class that has made a big difference to you or changed your personal ethical orientation or values. Consider which ethical theory, concept, or field of applied ethics (e.g. environmental ethics) has helped you grow or mature in your ethical journey. examples are consequentialist theories non-consequensatialist theories, virtue ethics. etc.
