The Researched Argument
Everything is an argument. Everything.
Think about it: Every time we write essays, we are trying to argue and support our points. Every time we read a fictional story, converse with another over an episode of our favorite T.V. show, or discuss a movie we hated, we are trying to argue and support our beliefs with regard to the points made by those fictional works. Every time we watch a televised ad, click on a YouTube video ad, or read a magazine with print ads, we understand that someone is trying to argue with us, to convince us to buy, or read, or believe, or vote….
According to The Successful Writing and Study Skills Handbook, “An argument is a logical and reasonable presentation of ideas that takes a stand on a position on a debatable issue or problem.” (Custom Edition 133) There are four main parts to an argument: A subject (problem or issue), a claim (the position/point/thesis taken on the subject), reasons (statements of why the claim is correct/should be accepted), and evidence (examples and details that support the claim—logos, pathos, and ethos here).
That said, Writing Project #3 (WP #3) is an argument that you will write that others will analyze. That means that you MUST really use heavy logos (facts, statistics, quotes, experts, etc.) because this is a RESEARCHED argument; your ethos will come from your “Works Cited” page at the end of your writing—you must have 3 sources. In fact, now is the time for you to contact Professor Mary Thompson, our course librarian, for help getting your sources together; yes, your sources can be websites, but there are some websites that are better than others, and, through the Library tab on your My Tri-C Space, you can access HUNDREDS of online, academic articles. Professor Thompson can help with that. You can find her here on our Blackboard course site under Discussions.
FYI: Check out procon.org, too, for this assignment!
Go light on pathos! Avoid putting logical fallacies into your argument!
Please write a 5-6 page, MLA-formatted, RESEARCHED argument on
Will implementing tougher gun control laws help prevent shooting rampages, or will they just make it harder for U.S. citizens to defend themselves?
