Live Interview Evaluation Instructions
Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Version 1.3
You will record a 20-30 minute video interview with a class partner, share it with the instructor through google drive, and evaluate yourself by taking the following steps, which are based on Homework exercises from pages 160-161 of class text (Young, 2020):
Transcribe each of your responses with a time stamp on the Live Interview Transcript below. For example, your first response at thirty seconds into the video: 00:30 “What would you like to talk about today?”
Classify the skill you used (see Live Interview Transcript below). For example, Open question, reflection of feeling, minimal encourager and door opener, reflection of meaning, closed question.
Add comments to your responses and the possible impact of responses on flow of the session and your partner.
In a written self-reflection (APA Style, include completed Live Interview Transcript), evaluate your overall clinical skills. Include strengths and areas for improvement. All of the following questions should be answered:
Was I able to get my partner to open up?
Are any of my gestures distracting to my partner?
Are my body position, facial expression, and voice tone inviting?
Do I allow silence sometimes to urge my partner to open up?
Do I appear relaxed?
Do I seem engaged with my partner, or am I too passive?
How many paraphrases and reflections of feelings did I use?
Did I rely too much on questions?
Did I reflect soon enough?
Did I overuse minimal encouragers rather than reflecting?
How many reflections of meaning was I able to attempt?
Are my words responsive to my partner’s last statement or to my own thoughts?
What are my natural strengths as a helper?
