For your final paper in this course you need to pick a federal or state statute

For your final paper in this course you need to pick a federal or state statute (not court decision or executive order) that applies to one of the areas of sociological inquiry listed below and analyze it using both conflict theory and structural functionalism. Your analysis should identify where the theories overlap in their analysis and where they diverge. You paper should be 2-3 pages with a full introduction, conclusion and analysis section. All paper sections should have proper headings for each section.
Pick one of the categories from the list below.
Gender
Race
Family
Education
Detail the statute
Examine the law using both conflict theory and structural-functionalism. Make sure to note where the theories overlap (see the same things) and where they diverge (see differences)
Using Conflict Theory and Functionalism to Analyze Law
For an example of what to do, please see the “Vagrancy Laws” supplement in the Conflict Theory chapter
When you “analyze” the laws you basically ask “what would conflict theorist functionalist say this law does”
These will be oppositional positions in almost every case, so you need to find 3 potential things
Where they overlap, or where the analysis is the same
Where they diverge or where the analysis is different
