Heres the assignment outline: “The student may attend a meeting of a religious group other than his/her own (for example, if you are Christian you should attend a Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist or Muslim worship experience) and write about that experience in a 4-6 page double spaced document. This should include a discussion of any rituals observed, the overall aesthetic experience, any interactions with adherents, etc. After years of teaching this class, I want to clarify for you what I expect with this assignment.
Here are a few ground rules:
1. Whatever religion you choose to attend, it needs to be one we covered in this course. (Judiasm, Christian, Buddhism, Muslim, Hinduism)
2. Your experience needs to be from THIS Spring. Do not write about a trip or experience that you had two years ago 🙂
3. Online attendance of a service DOES NOT FULFILL the requirement. It’s a mediated experience and will not be impactful to your way of thinking. This assignment is about getting direct experience with practicing adherents.
4. Finally, although weddings are nice and funerals important and bar mitzvahs and baptisms awesome, these are not rituals I’m interested in you attending for this assignment. I want you to have a genuine and personal experience with a group in a non-ceremonial mode of religious life. ”
