INSTRUCTIONS
For the first three assignments, you focused on analyzing, evaluating, and responding to other author’s arguments about your food-related topic. For this assignment, you are constructing your own argument about your topic. Because you are most familiar with it, I am asking that you continue with the same food-related topic that you wrote about in Essay #2.
Write a letter to your congressman! Or to an advocacy organization! Or to a magazine or journal!
For this assignment, you will choose a publication, person, or organization, and you will write a letter/essay to them explaining your position on your topic, and then suggest a detailed course of action or solution. In other words, you are writing a proposal to your chosen audience. The best way to do this is to think of this assignment in two parts: a problem and a solution/course of action!
To facilitate your argument and display your credibility, you should include at least 5 sources, chosen either from the research you performed in Essay #2 or from new research you conduct now. You need to use at least 2 scholarly sources, but the rest can be any kind of source you choose (website, book, popular periodical). Try to use sources which both support your argument and which express an opinion against which you can argue. Make the strongest case for both your “problem” opinion and your solution(s) using argumentative strategies like credibility, proof, and refutation.
YES, you should begin your essay with “Dear _________” so I’ll know who your intended audience is!
YES, use 1st person. This is a letter to your intended audience. If you were writing a letter to someone, you’d introduce yourself, tell why you were writing, etc. Feel free to that here too!
Incorporate the feedback you received from your instructor and from your peers to revise your essay for this final draft. Refer to the attached rubric frequently to help you do your best work.
