Is a “Really Good Spanking” Really Good?
Charlotte and Jeff stopped at a neighborhood
fast-food restaurant for a quick hamburger on
Saturday afternoon. The place was buzzing with
activity, and children of all ages were everywhere.
Charlotte and Jeff had no children of their own,
but they watched in amazement as many
different types of adults talked to, played with,
and reprimanded children.
Jeff was especially curious about one woman who seemed to be in charge of a half-dozen
youngsters. One of the children, a 6-year-old,
shook salt into her hand, licked it, then laughed as she brushed her salty hands over the children
near her. They shrieked with laughter as they
dodged the salt, throwing napkins to defend
themselves. The woman looked sternly at them
and threatened to make them sit in the car if they did not settle down.
Jeff leaned over and whispered to Charlotte,
“What those children need is a really good
spanking!”
CASE DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1. What could be some possible reasons the
children were behaving the way they were?
2. Why do you suppose Jeff believed spanking
would be helpful?
3. What do you think would be the most effective
and appropriate action for the woman in the
preceding situation?
You MUST support your answers with citations
from Chapter 9.
