One important definition for our discussions the word “rhetoric.” Writing teachers do not use the word in the sense that some people do, meaning an argument that is impressive but meaningless. In this class, we will define rhetoric as “the way a writer uses language to communicate effectively or to persuade an audience”. Writing rhetorically in English composition means roughly the same as writing well in the eyes of a specific group of people.
Exercise
Choose one of the following scenarios:
Option One: “Two tigers escaped from zoo enclosure. No one was hurt. The tigers were captured and returned safely.”
Option Two: “A volcano began erupting, and a town near the volcano was evacuated. The last resident to leave was a woman who returned to get the family dog. Everyone was evacuated safely.”
Option Three: “A local high school sports team hosted and played in the state championship game. They won in dramatic fashion.”
Then, re-create this scenario from three of the following six different viewpoints. Be sure to label your pieces “witness account” etc.:
Eyewitness account (50+ words).
Narrative or story retelling (50+ words).
Social media post (50+ words).
Movie script (50+ words).
News story (50+ words).
E-mail or text to a family member (50+ words).
You may add any additional information that you need, but the focus is for you to play with the language. In the end you should get three different writings about the same subject. Creativity is welcome
