We don’t usually think about why we eat the way we do.  This assignment seeks to help you understand and appreciate the influences on your eating behaviors and food choices and longterm effects.
Instructions
Write a minimum of a 1000-word essay that discusses how your family traditions and life experiences have influenced your eating habits today.  Include all “three parts” below (see content of the essay) into the essay; however, there are numerous “prompts” or bullet points in each “part” to help you think of ideas to write about you do not need to respond to each prompt.
Format of the Essay
A reflective essay is an essay in which you reflect on your personal experiences – this means that in the body of your essay you should be writing in first person.  As in any essay, a reflective essay should include an introduction, body and conclusion.  In addition, your essay should have proper sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and spelling.  Grading will be based upon the Grading Rubric (see below).  If for some reason you will be citing a reference use either MLA or APA formatting.
Content of the Essay
Part 1
Your food choices today are greatly affected by the influences of your parents, grandparents, and other adults.  *Consider the following questions in your response:
Does cultural heritage play a role in your eating habits? If so, how?
Does your parents or grandparents place of birth play a role in your eating habits? If so, how?
In what generation did your parents and grandparents grow up and how did this influence eating behaviors and foods eaten?
Does religion play a part in your eating habits? If so, how?
If you have a multi-ethnic background, how does this affect your eating habits?
Describe the ethnic or American foodways associated with holiday celebrations in your family.
Identify and describe any special ethnic foods prepared by older members of your family.
Describe any changes in your ethnic foodways that have occurred over time.  What were the forces behind the change?
Are there other influences that have shaped your eating habits? Perhaps you spent a lot of time at your best friend’s house or in a boarding school while growing up. 
Do you have favorite memories of a favorite dish or recipe that your mom or grandma made?
Are there other family food traditions for birthdays, 4th of July, Memorial day, Super bowl, etc.?
Did your mom pack you a lunch, did you eat the school lunch, and/or did you have typical after school snacks that shaped how you eat today?
Part 2
Ask your oldest living relative what food behaviors were followed and which foods s/he ate when s/he was young. Identify the reasons why these practices have changed.  *Consider the following questions in your response. 
What foods were eaten when your relative was young?
Does your relative still eat these foods? If not, why not?
How was food obtained when your relative was young?
How was food prepared when your relative was young?
What foods does your relative miss and why?
What does your relative think about today’s food environment?
Part 3
Your food experiences affect your choices, the influences on your children/spouse, and your future health.  *Consider the following questions in your response. 
Identify two foods from your own childhood which have positive or negative associations.  Explain why these associations exist. 
Think about how your (future) children will respond to this question, based on food habits and patterns in your current living situation.
How have the food traditions and eating habits in your life affected your diet, health, and weight today?
How will your food choices and eating behaviors affect your future health if you continue with the same habits?
