For this first option, you must research a real-life (not hypothetical) case, and write a piece that explores the case from the perspectives of bioethics, science, and religion. For this option, however, you are less constrained by the formulaic forms of academic communication we have practiced previously, and are welcome to write a paper that is more in the vein of Skloot’s ‘Taking the Least of You’ or Didion’s ‘The Case of Theresa Schaivo.’ Even with this more narrative focus, this paper should still utilize our broad themes—biology, nature, technology, religion, ethics—and explore how these concepts are either converging or diverging in the case you present. For example, you could explore the contemporary issue of religious and political objections to vaccines through the lens of the COVID-19 pandemic, and contextualize the larger issues around vaccines both historically and culturally. Final papers for Option 1 should be between 7-10 pages in length, have a clearly delineated argument/thesis, and demonstrate outstanding research.
