THE SELECTED MOVIE I CHOSE WAS RATATOUILLE
Introduction to FilmSpring 2024
LARGE PAPER TITLE: Stylistic Analysis of an Influential Film
PROMPT: This paper assignment asks you to consider why and how the film you’ve chosen became both a cultural icon (whether as a genre film or within a certain cultural niche), and how the stylistic elements of editing, mise-en-scene, cinematography, and/or sound helped to sustain its meaning within the film itself, then as an influencer to the Daniels for Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. You will write an 2000-2500 word (roughly 6-8 pages double-spaced) analytical essay about the thematic function of style in the film of your choosing from your discussion period signup.
CONTEXT:
Your overarching goal is to discuss how your film became an excellent example as a genre film or stands as an iconic film within a certain cultural niche. In order to do this you will need to use the class text/articles on genre studies or find one outside article that claims this movie is important to a certain group and use a minimum of one quote from the source to back up your position.
The second major objective of the essay is to describe important patterns (using the vocabulary of the course) in your chosen film. While you may refer to narrative or narrational patterns, your preliminary primary task is to identify stylistic patterns in the film.
Finally, you will also analyze how those patterns relate to a larger thematic function. For example: what is the purpose of the ways in which Richard Donner (fill in your own director) uses editing, and/or cinematography, and/or mise-en-scene, and/or sound? Develop an idea about what you take to be an important theme or meaning in the film (perhaps related to your chosen article about what makes this a great example of genre or an important movie within a certain culture), then develop an argumentative essay that explains your opinions about how at least two elements of style work in tandem to support that meaning.
This assignment requires you to develop your argument by citing multiple scenes or moments that you determine to be helpful in supporting your thesis. Describe in specific detail how your director (and possibly specific people in the production team) uses elements of film style in these scenes or at these moments. How are stylistic motifs initiated, sustained, or resolved in these scenes? How do these patterns contribute to your outside sources understanding of genre or this film’s cultural importance?
OTHER SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS:
Consult your last three papers and their written responses. This semester has been a building process toward the goal of this paper: Paper 1: CHC, Paper 2: MES, cinematography and editing. Midterm: Close analysis of MES and the way it works with narrative form.
The class material on style, genre and its functions in Cleo from 5 to 7, The Magnificent Seven, Chungking Express, Citizen Kane, Jackie Brown and Sunset Boulevard. (especially text references or supplementary articles)
Consult your textbook—specifically, pp. 57-60 in Chapter 2 (on form and meaning in film), the individual film analyses in Chapters 4 through 8, and especially Chapter 11, which contains sample full-length analyses.
Use “Appendix: Writing a Critical Analysis of a Film” from Film Art (10th edition), posted within “Supplemental Readings” for a brief discussion of how to write an analytical essay on a film. When you’re ready to plan out how you will construct the paper, refer to the structure offered on p. 452. You may find especially helpful the sample student essay on The King of Comedy on pp. 454-456.
