“Interior Design” is a chapter from Haven Kimmel’s book A Girl Named Zippy, in w

“Interior Design” is a chapter from Haven Kimmel’s book A Girl Named Zippy, in which she describes growing up in a very small town in Indiana. Much of it is from her perspective as a child, and all of her memories are rich with detail and humor. I cannot recommend it highly enough. : )
When you have read “Interior Design,” respond to any ONE of the following prompts in a post to our discussion thread.
1. Name three of the specific works of art or craft that Kimmel describes here, and choose one to think of symbolically.
For example: I love the collection of glass dolls that are filled with perfume (page 193). When the cat destroys them, I think it’s symbolic of how hard it is for young Haven to have, keep, or make anything beautiful.
2. How does the painting of a “young black boy with a bunch of violets” help to reveal the kind of town Kimmel lived in? (see page 195)
3. How does the hippie couple compare or contrast to the other families in town?
4. What is the significance of the trade Kimmel makes (haircuts for the dog)?
5. The story seems to have two endings, one with the dog and then an extra paragraph on page 200. What do the endings have to do with each other and with the story overall?
