1. By the end of the 20th century, the United States had higher life expectancy and higher overall health status than ever before.  Much of this is attributed to specific innovations to public health achieved in the past century.  In chapter 1, review “The Great Public Health Achievements-United States, 1900-1999 and 2001-2010”.  In 200-300 words, pick one of these achievements and discuss how it has helped to increase life expectancy and/or the overall health status in a community.  Provide factual documentation that reinforces your views from at least one peer reviewed source.

According to the CDC and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (part of the U.S. Department of Transportation), every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This is one death every 50 minutes. In 2010, the annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $44 billion. In 2016, more than 1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.  In 2018, more than 10,500 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for 28% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.  Police check points have been a great deterrent in reducing alcohol-impaired driving crashes. In 200-300 words, what else can a community do to effectively reduce traffic accidents due to alcohol consumption?  What primary prevention strategies can we use to stop people from driving drunk in the first place?
