This assignment is based on the film clips from Matchstick Men on our course page. There is a link for the full movie, but the assignment is based on the first 20 minutes of the film. There is also information in Chapter 12 (section 12-2) and Chapter 13 in the textbook that will help with this assignment.
For this assignment, I want you to observe Roy’s behavior (Roy is the character played by Nicholas Cage in the movie Matchstick Men). As you view the film, make note of any behaviors you think are odd or abnormal. Also, make note of anything you think might be considered a symptom of a psychological disorder. What I want you to do is use information from the film Matchstick Men and from chapters 12 & 13 in the textbook to diagnose Roy, and to respond to the following questions/prompts:
1. Identify by name the psychological disorders you think Roy has (hint: there are more than one).
2. Describe the symptoms that you observed in Roy’s behavior that led to your diagnosis.
3. Discuss what you think might have caused the disorders you diagnosed in Roy.
4. Discuss some form of treatment option or combination of options (from chapter 13 and the film) you think might help Roy.
I want you to take this seriously, but I also want you to have fun with this assignment. This is a chance to play the role of a Psychologist or Psychiatrist by generating a diagnosis based on the behavior you observe and the information you can gather from the film clips and the textbook.
