Assignment 1 will include a number of shorter exercises, as follows:
A memo to the instructor and class with the purpose of facilitating an in-class discussion on ethics by including the following: a one- or two-sentence introduction and 2 situations. The first should be an example of an unethical act that happened to you or a co-worker and the second one that was reported online (be sure to cite web page or article author and title). (see Ch.2 for important background information on ethics) (30 points);
A claim letter: (example, p.373). Your scenario may be hypothetical but be sure to use a real recipient and specific details (30 points);
An original email to a community, state, or university official currently in office (could be in the USA or abroad) about any issue of your choice— referring to the guidelines on pages 378-381; use a serious, professional tone and include the correct email address of the official (you are not required to actually send the email, though you may, of course if you wish) (30 points);
Three audience profile sheets filled out as completely as possible, one for each of the target audiences for the 3 documents above (see p.88) (3 points apiece).

Grading Criteria
Documents 1-3 are each worth 30 points, broken down as follows:
15 points – Form follows the conventions of each genre, such as proper headings for memos, spacing, greetings and closings for letters, paragraph blocking, appropriate font choices, etc.; grammar, spelling, and mechanics result in a correct and easy to read prose.
15 points – Content addresses the assignment prompt fully yet concisely; information is clear and accurate with sources cited; choice of language, information, and tone enhance the credibility of the writer.
Document 4 is worth 10 points, broken down as follows:
3 points for each audience profile sheet (3)
1 point bonus for turning in all 3
