Choose two stories from the assigned reading and compare and contrast the theme of Southern Gothic Literature.  You’ll explain how the author develops the theme of Southern Gothic Literature in these stories by illustrating what elements are similar and different between the two stories you select.  In other words, explain what elements support the theme of Southern Gothic Literature; or explain how each theme fits into the Southern Gothic literary genre we discussed in the last module.  Please be sure to compare and/or contrast three central elements or characters that support the theme. Cite evidence from each story and the reading outlining Southern Gothic Literature to support thesis.
Goals of this essay:
1) Reading and writing critically — dissect a concept or issue; 
2) Audience:  enhance the understanding of your audience by focusing on minute details from the text;
3) Teach the following techniques:  process, definition, classification and division, or comparison and contrast. These techniques will help each student break ideas into several parts through classification and division, and then analysis;
4) Teach paragraph unity and development;
5) Teach how to summarize reading; and
6) Teach how to use quotes in-context.
Evaluation Criteria:
An introductory paragraph that:
Frames the issue.
An engaging introduction which contains definition of key terms and/or concepts.
An effectively written thesis.  Before you submit your essay, underline the thesis statement.
Body paragraphs that support the thesis of the essay. Each paragraph should begin with an effective topic sentence.  Each body paragraph must be fully developed (10 – 12 sentences) and contain evidence from the reading as well as clearly explained/reasoned analysis. 
Reference specific details from the text.
Use no more than three quotes and one block quote. Be sure to correctly cite each quote. 
ABAB structure
Two extended paragraphs.
Effectively use transitional words and phrases.
A conclusion paragraph.
A passing essay will not have more than three sentence-level errors.
