I chose Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of cognitive development for this discussion topic. Sociocultural theory emphasizes the impact on children’s development through that of more knowledgeable mentors in their community (Woolfolk., et al., 2023). Through interactions, Vygotsky theorized that children learn their community’s culture; their ways of thinking, and what behaviours are deemed socially acceptable in particular scenarios (Woolfolk., et al., 2023).
I agree with Vygotsky that it is important to have a guiding mentor, whether that be family or someone like a teacher, coach, or instructor. Children need to learn social cues to adapt quickly to the environment in which they are put. In this case, a child could learn from watching the actions of the role model, thus engaging in imitative learning. Imitative learning is one of the three learning styles Vygotsky mentions; it is where one tries to imitate the other, consequently learning behaviours (Woolfolk., et al., 2023). The other two learning styles are instructed learning and collaborative learning. The former involves internalizing the instructions to use, teach, and self-regulate, whereas the latter includes peers who strive to understand each other (Woolfolk., et al., 2023).
Vygotsky believed that cultural tools, including technical tools, and psychological tools are important for cognitive development (Woolfolk., et al., 2023). Cultural tools include rulers, abacuses, calculators, devices, and psychological tools like signs and symbols (e.g., numbers). In modern education, we should be using these tools to educate children. Cultural tools, like new technologies, are a big part of our society and will be relevant in the child’s lifetime. Psychological tools on the other hand have assisted in accomplishing higher mental processes, such as reasoning and problem-solving.
While reading about Vygotsky, it is evident that his main goal of education was to achieve higher mental function development in children, rather than simply filling their memories with facts (Woolfolk., et al., 2023). Throughout my academic history, I have encountered many educators who found children should not just memorize the information; they encouraged students to fully understand the course material. I think this thought process becomes apparent when Vygotsky mentions scaffolding. This is a method of support for learning and problem solving in which the educator provides tools to help the student learn, understand, and figure out the problem (e.g., clues, encouragement, dissecting the problem, providing examples, reminders, etc.) (Woolfolk., et al., 2023). I believe this method is relevant to modern education because I often will use these procedures to assist my method of explaining topics to others and amplify my understanding when I am learning.
I decided to read an article emphasizing the role of sociocultural theory in modern-day areas of psychology including that of education. It emphasizes the importance of Vygotsky’s theory and how it influences human minds, selves, and mental functions (Chirkov, 2020). It examines social and cultural attributes and the high demand for them in the lives of people; and influences how people function (Chirkov, 2020). We can take from this that his theory is relevant to today’s educational system and how humans interact, teach, and learn in general.

Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development plays a prevalent role in today’s educational system for a variety of reasons. His research on how children acquire knowledge through active interaction with their environment continues to affect modern teaching practices. Piaget’s theory proposes that children proceed through four developmental stages: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. Each stage symbolizes a distinct style of thinking and comprehending the environment, emphasizing that learning is a progressive process dependent on preparation rather than a forced outcome (Wolfolk & Usher, 2022).
Piaget’s theory remains largely important because it is used to create a developmentally appropriate curriculum. Teachers who understand these stages can plan classes that align with their students’ cognitive ability. For example, children in the preoperational period struggle with logical reasoning and abstract notions. Teachers employ actual items, such as blocks or visual aids, to illustrate mathematical ideas. This concept promotes active learning practices in today’s classrooms, where hands-on learning has been found to improve engagement and comprehension.
Furthermore, Piaget’s theory supports the current trend for discovery-based learning. His approach implies that children learn best when they explore and discover new concepts on their own, rather than through direct instruction. This approach is still reflected in contemporary educational techniques, such as inquiry-based learning and project-based learning. Science teachers, for example, may conduct experiments in which students test ideas for themselves, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving abilities that correspond with Piaget’s emphasis on students constructing their knowledge through experience and comprehension.
Another important component of Piaget’s theory is that it encourages educators to consider cognitive development as an individual process. The school system has increasingly embraced varied instruction, recognising that children learn at various rates and require different techniques to reach similar cognitive goals. This is consistent with Piaget’s idea that children go through developmental stages at their own pace, and hence teachers must consider individual readiness when teaching new concepts (Woolfolk & Usher, 2022).
However, critics contend that Piaget undervalued children’s capacities and ignored the impact of social and cultural influences in cognitive development, which is why some educators use Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory to supplement Piaget’s work. Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) theory proposes that children may learn difficult activities with sufficient assistance, a concept that is increasingly being used in classrooms today called scaffolding. Despite this, Piaget’s theory remains a solid foundation, particularly in early childhood education, where comprehension of developmentally appropriate learning is critical (McLeod, 2020).
Overall, Piaget’s theory of cognitive development remains important to today’s educational system, particularly in curriculum building, active learning practices, and differentiated instruction. Despite certain limitations, its main ideas assist instructors in understanding the natural progression of learning, ensuring that pupils develop strong cognitive foundations before moving on to more complicated concepts.
