Use of Research Evidence by Criminal Justice Professionals (Johnson,
et al., 2018).
Understanding key terminology used in
research is important before beginning any new research. Ensuring that research
is valid and the methods and instruments are reliable enhances the study or
project increasing creditability and acceptance. Depending on the purpose of
research, one must decide the methodology that will be used in the study or
project, such as qualitative, quantitative, or a mixture of methods.
Additionally, understanding basic terminology and how they are used with
methodology serves as a baseline for any study or research project, such as
theory and hypothesis. These methodologies may involve observations and
empirical generalizations, both of which are discussed in the reading.
In a 4-5-page paper, discuss what the
population is and how it is related to a sample. Then define validity and
reliability. Explain how these concepts are related. Describe the difference
between qualitative and quantitative research and discuss how they are used in
a particular paper based upon methodology. Finally, include a section on the various
steps required in research process, including theory, hypothesis, observations,
and empirical generalizations. Be sure to include scholarly research, recent
articles, or current events to support your findings or position following APA.
Use the APA and writing resources in the Getting Started folder to help you
draft your paper, including multiple in-text citations and references. You will
find an example of an APA paper that may be helpful.
Note: The paper must
be written in narrative form and include a title page, page numbers, headers,
in-text citations, and references following APA. The title page and references
are in addition to the page requirement. Refer to the APA and writing resources
in the Getting Started forum for guidance on developing a student APA paper.
The title page and references are not included within the page count.
