When selecting and implementing interventions with children, it is essential to be aware of their developmental stage. Their language and cognitive capability may be limited, so alternatives to traditional talk therapy are sometimes needed. Play therapy, which can integrate art, dolls, sensory props, and other toys, is regularly used with young children to help them tell their stories and gain control of what happened to them. Social workers may also use mindfulness-based techniques to help children regulate in times of stress.
