Policy Proposal or Critique in Elementary Education: Project 1, Part 2
Overview
For the second part of this project, you will write a 1200–1500 word paper critically analyzing a chosen national policy affecting elementary education. You will propose improvements or changes to address one or more current issues, outline the issues and address the following guidelines:
Select a policy: Choose a relevant policy in elementary education at the state, local or other level. This policy should have a significant impact on the current issues in elementary education.
Conduct research: Investigate the background, history and current status of the selected policy. Gather 5–6 relevant resources, such as scholarly articles, reports or news articles, to support your analysis. Make sure to keep track of your sources for proper citation.
Analyze the policy: Critically examine the policy’s effectiveness in addressing current issues in elementary education. Consider the following questions:
What are the intended goals and outcomes of the policy?
What might be some unintended outcomes of the policy?
How has the policy been implemented, and what are the results so far?
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the policy?
How does the policy impact various stakeholders (e.g., students, teachers, administrators and parents)?
Develop a proposal or critique: Based on your analysis, either propose improvements to the existing policy or critique the policy’s shortcomings. Your proposal or critique should be well-justified and supported by evidence from your research.
Instructions
For this part of the assignment, you should produce a paper, structured in a clear and coherent manner, which includes the following sections:
Introduction: Introduce the selected policy and its relevance to current issues in elementary education. Briefly summarize your main argument or critique.
Background: Provide a brief overview of the policy’s history and its current status. Explain how the policy was intended to address issues in elementary education.
Analysis: Present your critical analysis of the policy, discussing its strengths, weaknesses and impact on stakeholders. Incorporate evidence from your research to support your claims.
Proposal or Critique: Offer well-reasoned improvements or critiques of the policy supported by evidence from your research. Explain how your suggestions could better address current issues in elementary education.
Conclusion: Summarize your main points, and restate your argument or critique. Emphasize the importance of addressing the chosen policy to improve elementary education.
Assignment Guidelines and Rubric
Your assignment should be approximately 1200–1500 words in length.
Your assignment should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins all around and 12-point Times New Roman font.
Research and support your topic with a minimum of 5–6 academic sources.
