This study was subject to a good deal of supportive publicity in many major newspapers but also the subject of some criticism about the applicability and quality of the dataset used. The major point of criticism was the use of the US Census Bureau North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes for food outlet data and how the NAICS classification of food outlets by type tends to be insufficient to reflect the heterogeneity of food outlets and more detailed measures such as store inventories, ratings of food quality that are available in the food outlet, and shelf space may be more predictive of health outcomes. Unfortunately, gathering such data would be more costly and is not available on a national scale. The use of the NAICS classification system means that many different types of food outlet stores were classified with the same code for the study. For example, an inner city corner bodega that may primarily sell cigarettes and lottery tickets but just happens to sell a few food items would be classified with the same code as a neighborhood grocery store like Kroger.
