A comparative analysis, known also as a comparison and
contrast essay, is for this class a textual analysis that studies two short
stories, not one. It does not analyze the works in isolation, but in
connection to each other. This means that if an aspect of one story is
discussed, such as setting or character, then that same aspect must be
discussed in the other story. A comparative analysis will therefore toggle
between stories. Sometimes that alternation will happen sentence-to-sentence,
or even within sentences; sometimes it will happen paragraph to paragraph. But
the back and forth between stories does need to occur.A thesis statement should be present to give the paper
focus. Specific references to stories – textual evidence in the form of
quotations or paraphrases – need to be cited using MLA style, with a works
cited page attached to the end of the paper.
