Overview of Principal’s In-Basket Assignment The daily life of a principal invol

Overview of Principal’s In-Basket Assignment The daily life of a principal involves various forms of interactions and problem solving with the diverse members of the school community (cultural, ethnic, racial, economic, and special interest groups). This set of in-basket items (in the linked document below) contains numerous issues, concerns, and problems related to the internal and external communities. The short scenarios include such items as requests to use the school for meetings for a controversial group, concerns or requests from staff members, requests/demands from parents, requests from your superintendent, and others. This assignment has three parts. The directions for each part are provided below. Activity Directions: Part One Your task is to read and take action on all of the in-basket items presented in the linked document below. Assume you received these items on a Monday morning during the first nine weeks of the school year. Each of the in-basket items requires a separate action. You should not merely describe what you would do, but DO IT. For example, if you decide to telephone a person or see someone for a conference, then outline your objectives, as well as the main points or questions that you would present. If you decide to write an email, compose the email. Please respond to each in-basket item in order (1 through 20). All written communications should conform to the guidelines presented within the course to date. In addition, consider the information you have learned about electronic communications. Pay special attention to the “tone” in email messages you write. Given the wide responsibilities of the principal, there often will be items competing for priority. You should establish an order of priority for each of the items. Activity Directions: Part Two Think about how you would prioritize the items. Re-order the entire list of 20 items to indicate the order in which you would respond. Following each item provide your rationale using the four issues provided above. For example: First – Item 11 Second – Item 16 And, continue for all 20 items. Four issues to consider when setting these priorities Precedence (If I solve this problem, will it be easier to solve other problems?) Urgency (How pressing is the need for action? What deadlines will be missed, and what opportunities will be lost?) Growth (What is the trend of the difficulty? Worsening? Improving? Stabilizing?) Seriousness (How important is the goal that is affected by this situation? How severe is the current impact?) Activity Directions: Part Three Complete the Time Management Work of the Principal matrix on the last page of the linked document. Identify each activity as High/Urgency/High Importance, etc., and list it in one of the four columns. Review the rubric at the bottom of the assignment that will be used to evaluate your submission.
