PROMPT:
After reading Dokey’s “Sanchez” and watching “Mississippi Masala” directed by Mira Nair link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHQrw_s28qA
some questions come to mind, such as what does it mean to be from a place? What is home? What is belonging? Using specific textual passages from the story “Sanchez” and specific quotes with time stamps from the film “Mississippi Masala” to support your position, write an essay about whether Juan going “home” means (1) he went back to Mexico, or (2) he committed suicide and about whether Jay (an Indian by race) going “home” means (1) he went back to Uganda, or (2) he is content to live a displaced life in Biloxi, USA, with his loved ones (his wife and family).
In other words, in your argument essay, using quotes from the story and the film, take a position on what “home” means for Juan and Jay, using both Juan’s (in the story) and Jay’s (in the film) experiences with any/some of the following themes: separation from nature, fear of death, loneliness, identity, culture, culture clash, displacement, racism, alienation, hybridity, discrimination, etc. and any other cultural construct you can identify at work in both artifacts.
ESSAY WORD COUNT: Not less than 500 words.
(This prompt is adopted from the textbook, page 453. The story to be used for this assignment is part of the assigned readings for this week and can be found in the textbook. A link to the film can be found in WEEK 3 on Blackboard and a physical copy of the film can be borrowed from the library from the Course Reserve section specifically for students in this class. See course syllabus/schedule for more details.)
Be sure to include quotes from the story and film to support your claims in your essay for best scores.
