Essay Length: 1 ½ – 2 pages (Typed, in MLA formatting)
Essay Directions: We frequently try to make sense of the world by finding similarities and
differences between our experiences. Seeing how things are alike (comparing) or seeing how they
are different (contrasting) will help impose meaning on experiences that otherwise might remain
fragmented and disconnected. You are to EITHER COMPARE (explain similarities) OR
CONTRAST (explain differences) two similar topics. Write a fully developed essay either comparing
or contrasting two similar topics. When typed according to MLA format, the essay should be 1½ – 2
pages.
Due Date: This essay is your final exam. The essay will be graded for coherence, clarity, content,
and correctness. Your essay is due to Blackboard at the time designated for the final exam TBA.
Turning it in: When you are completely done writing and editing your essay, save your document as
YOUR FIRST AND LAST LEGAL NAME AND THE WORD FINAL (Ex: John Doe Final). Upload
your WORD document to the assignment button at the very bottom of our Blackboard page. Double
check the assignment button to make sure it actually saved your document into the page.
Reminders:
-Vary the sentences beginnings, kinds, and lengths.
-Be sure to use 3rd person point of view throughout the entire essay.
-Your essay must follow the basic conventions of standard formal academic English (correct
mechanics, usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and so forth); avoid
colloquial language.
-Use a structured pattern for your paragraphs: point-by-point
-Avoid irrelevant or trivial points.
-Also, don’t forget about basic structure of the essay:
-Begin with an introductory paragraph.
-Body paragraphs should begin with topic sentences, followed by general proof, specific proof,
and commentary.
-You should end your essay with a conclusion paragraph.
-Allow the conclusion to grow from the essay’s content.
-Remember to title your essay uniquely.
