This week we learned about insider trading. Insider trading is the trading of a public company’s stock or other securities (such as bonds or stock options) based on material, nonpublic information about the company. There are laws that make it illegal to trade public stock on inside information. The documentary is very short and it shows how congressional representatives appear to trade based upon information received from their position as congressional representative. Please watch this short video and answer the following questions:
Why is insider trading a bad thing? What kind of damages is done?
Should congressional representatives be forced to turn over all their assets to a blind trust while working as a congressional representative?
Should congressional representatives be subjected to quarterly audits by an independent agency to make sure they are following the laws?
Do you think that congressional representatives are putting their interest above the interest of the people they took an oath to serve? How so?
