For this project, you will have read “The Rhetoric of American Indian Activism i

For this project, you will have read “The Rhetoric of American Indian Activism in the 1960s and 1970s” by John Sanchez and Mary E. Stuckey (the “Lens” text), as well as the “Alcatraz Proclamation” and “The Letter” written by the collective activist group “Indians of all Tribes,” with Adam Fortunate Eagle being the primary author.  The second section of the “Lens” text focuses on the four specific audiences which activists had to engage and the rhetorical devices used to address those respective audiences – these are the primary “tools” you will use in your analysis, although the entirety of the “lens” text is there to help you, contextually.
You will use “The Rhetoric” text as a lens on “The Proclamation” and “The Letter,” exploring how the specific rhetorical moves discussed in the “lens” text are implemented in the target texts. You will pick at least one example from each of the target texts and describe how it works, why it may have been used, and possible effects on the audience.  You need to use a total of three examples, but you must analyze BOTH target texts.
Ultimately, you need to determine how effective the activists’ strategies were for the 4 main target audience.
Successful Papers will do the following:
Introduce the topic and the text on rhetoric (the “lens”). Briefly introduce the target texts, and describe what the paper will do (metadiscourse).
Analyze one element of context (audience being the most pertinent for this paper) from each of the target texts, using the “lens” text to provide you with the tools to conduct your analysis.  Using examples, discuss how the specific portion of the text you are examining works, why it may have been used in the context, and possible effects on the audience
Present a conclusion.  In other words, answer the question “So what, who cares?” What is significant about the work you did/things you learned in the course of writing this paper?
Implement proper stylistic conventions to include: sentence variation, college-level vocabulary, target audience, complex sentence structure.
Smoothly integrate supporting evidence (quotes) into the text.
Be cohesive, with a clear structure that uses effective transitions to hold together the discussion.
Include proper MLA documentation, with in-text citations and a Works Cited list at the end
