Your assignment for Module Six is to write a paper. NOT a term paper – an ESSAY. Here’s the situation you are to write for:
Earth has been invaded by friendly beings from another Galaxy. They wish to cohabit peacefully.
They know nothing about history, sociology, politics, love, religion as it exists on earth.
You have been hired to write a 5-7 page paper introducing them to FOUR classic American songs that, in your judgement, represent the best of American music, and whose lyrics provide an insight into who we are as people, either our strengths or our struggles.
The FOUR songs you choose must represent the following categories of American music:
1. American folk songs
2. American rock ‘n roll
3. American Latin music or a musical style of any other group of American immigrants (for example, Cajun music or Irish music).
4. American Black Music (after rock ‘n roll)
American is defined, for this exercise, as being written and/or performed by an American musician, and performed widely in the US. The amazing band, Queen, does NOT qualify. Nor do the Beatles or the Rolling Stones.
Your examples should come from a wide variety of times, and represent different eras in our history.
In your paper, explain WHY you chose each piece (being sure to give complete song name, artist name, lyricist name, date written, and which category it represents). Provide information about the MUSIC itself, including the instrumentation, vocal type, any unusual features of the music. Explain the lyrics, but do not quote long passages (we will assume you would give them a handout – no need to make that). And explain why you find that piece especially important that you think it is one of 4 songs they should know ! (we do not want obscure pieces or composers in this assignment). If possible, set the example in a historic time setting.
5-7 pages, double-spaced. EVERY SENTENCE SHOULD HAVE A FACT IN IT.
Grading will be 50% content – originality will be rewarded. You may insert photos, but should then increase the length of the document.
Complete Bibliography is required, listing all sources. Use any standard Bibliographic style, but do not just list urls. Omission of Bibliography is a 4 pt deduction.
Your document will be scanned for plagiarism, and graded down accordingly. Use your own voice. Papers that read like a typical term paper will not fulfill this requirement.
Cover pages, bibliography, or less than complete pages of text will not count toward the 5 page minimum requirement.
