You are writing an opinion piece – think of it as if you are a newspaper columni

You are writing an opinion piece – think of it as if you are a newspaper columnist and you are
making an argument in an article.
Your opinion piece should be structured like an essay, and should contain the following:
● Introduction: In the introduction, you should include:
○ An overview of your social issue from a global perspective.
○ Is this a recent issue or a long-standing challenge?
○ Thesis (central idea or main message): State your position on an argument in regards to how your social issue affects people globally.
● Body: In the body of your opinion piece (argument) will be focused on:
● What does your social issue look like at the global level? How does it affect people globally? What are the causes of the problem at the global scale?
● Does the social issue lead to inequality across diverse groups? When looking across diverse groups, are certain groups impacted positively? Negatively? Explain.
● Why, in your opinion, should people care and be concerned about this issue?
● Describe any current government, business, and/or nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) addressing the problem? How effective have efforts been to reduce or eliminate the problem?
● Your educated opinion (based on your research) what should be done to decrease the negative impacts this issue creates globally, including how to lessen the social and economic inequality, if appropriate.
● Be sure to include research to support your claims in the content you develop to address the bullet items above:
■ Throughout your Opinion Editorial utilize rhetorical appeals: logos and pathos, and demonstrate ethos.
■ Include content from multiple social science perspectives (economic, sociological, ethical, and political).
■ Include in at least one section of your Opinion Editorial a statistical chart or graph that visually represents the impact of this issue on a global scale and/or supports your argument. Summarize the information in the graph. Focusing on quantitative information, identify and interpret the information in the chart or graph that is important to supporting your perspective.
■ Include a discussion about your statistical chart or graph that focuses on the limitations of the data presented or any assumptions that were made by the authors using the data (i.e. were there generalizations, were the samples applicable to the conclusions made, did the researchers include sufficient diversity in the sample, etc.). What additional data would you
like to have or questions you would like to see answered regarding the data? Explain.
■ Throughout your Opinion Editorial include evidential support that is both qualitative and quantitative.
● Conclusion
○ Concluding paragraph ties the argument together and reinforces your perspective.
